Disaster Recovery Expertise Aids in the Rebuilding of the City of West, TX

In April 2012, the City of West, Texas experienced a tragic fertilizer plant explosion that leveled the plant and several surrounding neighborhoods. Soon after the incident, Mayor Tommy Muska, along with city officials, began seeking opportunities to improve the town by spurring economic growth and supporting new residential areas. They hired KAI Design & Build to work with sister company KAI Texas to develop a master plan for the damaged areas, shepherd the town's redevelopment and augment its economic expansion.

Darren L. James, President and COO of KAI Texas, AIA, was recently named a 2014 Minority Business Leader by the Dallas Business Journal (DBJ). James was honored for his advocacy and support of minority business endeavors at an awards luncheon held at the Omni Dallas Hotel on February 6, 2014.

Incorporate Community Input, Local Culture in Designs to Enhance Transit Stations

The U.S. is undergoing a resurgence in rail-based mass transit as miles of rail are laid and stations are placed strategically across every region. Cities, counties, and regions are not typically homogenous. Passengers desire a unique contextual motif to define their sense of place. Imagine boarding a train near your home during your daily commute to work. As you ride along the color-coded rail line, you observe a station that reflects the heritage and commerce of the residents of a particular neighborhood.

Transit System Expands Its Art Direction
Engineering News Record

Dallas, Texas, known for its museums and high-profile cultural district, has added a new art venue. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) recently opened their new Green Line, a 28-mile light rail transit route. The system’s D’Art Gallery celebrates the region’s heritage through the works of 19 station artists and two commissioned artists. Every station uses one prototype design, which served as the canvas from which each artist would work; the basic structure and canopy are consistent throughout the system.
